Northern Portugal is home to one of Portugal’s most beautiful cities, Porto – a city full of charm, riverside beauty, historic azulejo-covered buildings, and world-famous port wine.

✈️ Plan a trip to Portugal
How you plan your Portugal trip mostly comes down to how many days you have. Portugal may seem a smaller country, but there’s a lot to see – medieval castles, vibrant cities, coastal landscapes, mountains, islands…
Below, you’ll find simple trip ideas to help you decide where to go and how to make the most of your time.
🚗 Getting to & around Portugal

Main international airports in Portugal:
- Lisbon (LIS): the main gateway, well-served by transatlantic and European flights
- Porto (OPO): the best entry point to the north
- Faro (FAO): main airport in Algarve, Southern Portugal
- Funchal (FNC): your main option to get to Madeira
- Ponta Delgada (PDL): your gateway to the Azores
Getting around Portugal:
- Car rental: the best option for road trips. Remember to ask for Via Verde for toll roads
- Trains: great between cities: Lisbon–Porto (3h), Lisbon–Faro (3h), Porto–Aveiro, Lisbon-Sintra
- Buses: Rede Expressos fills the gaps where trains don’t reach – reliable and cheap
- City transport: Lisbon and Porto have metros, trams, and apps like Uber and Bolt
☀️ Best time to visit Portugal
Spring (April to June)
This is one of the best times to visit Portugal. The weather is warm but not too hot, prices are lower than in summer, and it’s perfect for exploring cities, road trips, and hiking.
Summer (July to August)
This is peak season in Portugal. Expect hot weather, busy beaches, and higher prices. Great for a beach-focused trip. Inland areas can get very hot, even reaching 40°C / 105°F.

Fall (September to October)
Another ideal time to visit Portugal. The weather is still warm, crowds are smaller, and it’s a great time for cities, the coast, and hiking. This is my favorite time of the year in Portugal.
Winter (November to March)
From November, the weather gets less predictable, with more rain, especially in the north. Winter is quieter and more affordable, but it can rain for a few days in a row.
