Come with me to uncover unique spots and hidden gems in Porto, Portugal! Even though Porto is full of beautiful and famous places, sometimes the best moments happen in the smaller, quieter corners that most people walk right past.

We’ve spent several weeks exploring Porto, including all its famous landmarks, scenic viewpoints, and also the lesser-known spots that usually don’t get a mention in traditional travel guides.

In this blog post, you’ll find the most interesting hidden gems in Porto, with descriptions, photos, and exact Google Maps locations so you can easily add them to your Porto itinerary. Happy travels!

If you’re looking for unique spots and hidden gems in Porto, look no further! Capela Incomum is one of the most unique wine and tapas bars in Porto – a true hidden gem tucked inside a small 19th-century chapel.

This is honestly the coolest bar I’ve visited!

It is located on a quiet street a bit away from the busy tourist areas, which makes the whole experience feel more local and intimate.

We knew it was a small bar, so we arrived right before the opening time just to make sure we had seats – our mistake! People who work there only started arriving when the bar was supposed to open the doors, haha.

Just in case, come here half an hour after the opening time!

They have tables inside as well as outside, but I recommend getting a table inside the chapel. The soft lighting gives the space a cozy, slightly mysterious atmosphere. We sat right by the altar, and it felt a bit weird, but also not too weird. 😅

They serve a fantastic selection of Portuguese wines, especially from the local Douro and Minho regions, and the staff is really friendly and happy to recommend something based on what you like.

I didn’t know what I wanted, and they gave me a delicious Vinho Verde, a popular Portuguese wine. We also ordered various Portuguese tapas, and they turned out absolutely delicious. It was enough for the two of us – perfect choice for an easy dinner!

Capela Incomum isn’t just a bar – it’s an experience. The combination of history, ambiance, and good wine makes it one of the most memorable hidden spots you can visit in Porto. I’ll certainly never forget this little chapel!

2. Largo da Pena Ventosa

Largo da Pena Ventosa is a small charming square in Porto lined with colorful houses and cobblestones

Largo da Pena Ventosa is one of those small, picturesque, charming Porto corners that only a few tourists stumble upon. The little square is surrounded by narrow streets, colorful houses, and little balconies that make the whole area look like a fairytale movie set.

In this tiny square, you’ll find pastel-colored facades, uneven stone steps, different plant pots scattered around, and that cozy Porto vibe. A little hidden gem in the heart of Porto.

We stumbled upon this spot while exploring the maze of streets around Porto Cathedral (it is just a short walk away!). It’s quiet, not touristy, and perfect for a few cute photos! You can even spot the towers of Saint Lawrence Church from here!

3. Natas d’Ouro

These natas will be a treat to your taste buds!

The most unique natas in the city of Porto!

Trying the famous pastel de nata pastry is one of the best things you can do in Porto.

While everyone knows about the famous pastel de nata workshops in Porto, like Castro, Manteigaria, or Fábrica da Nata, there is one special hidden gem you need to know about.

How does lemon pastel de nata sound? Or orange, chocolate, or even port wine pastel de nata? If you’re exploring Porto’s downtown (Baixa) and want a pastel de nata that feels both traditional and a little special, Natas d’Ouro is a must-stop.

Their natas are outstanding with light, flaky crust, rich and creamy custard filling, and just the right amount of sweetness. However, what makes them stand out is that they offer pastel de nata with unique flavors.

Apart from the original version (which was delicious), you can try several different pastel de nata flavors – something I only saw at this pastry shop in Porto. We couldn’t resist and got one of each flavor, haha!

It’s definitely one of the most unique hidden gems in Porto, so if you love trying new foods, make sure to add this place to your Porto itinerary!

4. Escadas dos Guindais

Escadas dos Guindais offer a unique view of the Dom Luis I Bridge in Porto

Hidden far away from the crowded Porto Ribeira down by the river, or the Dom Luís I Bridge, or the city’s famous miradouros, is this unusual viewpoint in Porto.

This is one of those unexpected places you only find out about when a random friend tells you about it, but, honestly, the view from the top of Escadas dos Guindais stairs was one of my favorite viewpoints in Porto.

This narrow staircase sits right under the Dom Luís I Bridge, so you get a super close, dramatic look at Porto’s most iconic landmark from below.

We climbed all the way from the bottom to the top, and I personally liked the view from the top the most – it definitely gives a different perspective of the bridge!

So, because it is a pedestrian street, there is usually a constant stream of people during the day. If you want to skip the crowds, try to come in the morning. We came early and had no problems taking a few photos before heading down for breakfast.

Location: Escadas dos Guindais

5. Rooftop of Saint Lawrence Church

The rooftop of the Saint Lawrence Church offers the best view of Porto and the Douro River below

Located right next to Porto Cathedral, one of the most famous landmarks in the city, this beautiful 16th-century church often goes unnoticed by the standard tourist crowds.

From the outside, the beautiful Saint Lawrence Church stands out with its long, stunning façade towering on the hillside, and part of the regular tourist crowds stop by to take a photo of the façade.

But not many travelers know that this church has a cool secret.

Inside, the church is calm and has a few nice details from different periods, since it has gone through several changes over the centuries. You’ll find period art, furniture, and some religious artifacts.

But its highlight is definitely the rooftop. You can climb up to the church’s bell towers and get some of the most amazing panoramic views over the city.

We were the only people on the rooftop when we visited, and maybe that’s why this is one of my favorite hidden gems in Porto.

On one side of the roof, you’ll see the Douro River and Porto’s Ribeira, but on the other side, there will be Porto’s old town with other famous Porto towers like the Torre dos Clérigos.

But if you look through the arches of the church’s tower, you’ll see the Porto Cathedral right next to it. And it will probably be full of people, while you are standing there on the rooftop alone (like we did!).

If you have some time to spare and you love discovering unique spots hidden away from the usual tourist crowds, do check out this church. There is a small entrance fee to climb up to the roof, but it was totally worth it.

6. Holy Sandwich Shop

Their 5-star reviews speak for themselves!

I know that travelers usually try the bucket list foods in Porto, like pastel de nata or francesinha, but hear me out – it is okay to visit other food spots, especially if they’re as good as Holy Sandwich Shop.

Tucked on a charming street, this tiny restaurant is one of those small Porto places you walk past a hundred times without noticing, and only locals know that they make the best burgers and some of the best sandwiches in the city!

Although the place is small, the vibe there is super relaxed. I recommend arriving BEFORE they open, as there usually is a line outside the door. Yes, it is a popular spot among locals.

And I can understand – the prices are reasonable, the portions are big, and the food was even better than we expected.

Sandwiches with grilled meat are actually a pretty typical Portuguese food, so I would not count this as international food. If you enjoy a good, juicy burger and appreciate quality food, then add this little gem to your list! We’ll definitely return!

7. Casa da Música

Casa da Música in Porto, Portugal
Casa da Música is a modern concert hall in Porto, Portugal

Casa da Música is one of Porto’s most iconic modern landmarks and definitely a spot you shouldn’t miss if you love architecture, culture, or unique photo locations.

While locals know this place very well, not many tourists ever wander this far away from the city center. But we did. You can easily reach this building by metro from the Porto center.

It’s not a place to go if you are short on time, but because we stayed in Porto for weeks, we decided to give this place a go.

Casa da Música is a great place for unique photos

Casa da Música is essentially a concert hall. This striking building immediately stands out thanks to its bold geometric shape, designed by the world-famous architect Rem Koolhaas.

The building opened in 2005 and quickly became a symbol of contemporary Porto. This place hosts concerts ranging from classical music to jazz, world music, and modern performances. So if you’re into classical music or any other genres, make sure to check their agenda.

However, if you’re not attending a show, you can join a guided tour through the building to see the interior, which is just as unique as the outside. Especially, the wave-like wooden walls that create amazing acoustics.

They take you through multiple different rooms, halls, studios, etc., each decorated with different patterns and painted in different colors.

My favorite was the room that was laid out with the Portuguese tiles – it reminded me of Porto’s Sao Bento train station or the charming tile-covered Capela das Almas church!

I never thought I would purchase a ticket just to walk around a concert hall, but here we are. This tour isn’t for everyone, but if you have a background in music, you love architecture, or unique places for photos, you might enjoy this hidden gem in Porto!

And it is definitely one of the coolest modern spots to visit in Porto.

8. Famous Porto éclairs at Leitaria da Quinta do Paço

The historical pastry shop Leitaria da Quinta do Paço sells the best éclairs in Porto

Would you like to try the best éclairs in Porto?

If there’s one sweet you should try in Porto (besides pastéis de nata), it’s the éclairs from Leitaria da Quinta do Paço. This place has been around since 1920, originally starting as a dairy business producing milk, butter, and cream.

Over time, they became known for their whipped cream, and eventually turned that into their signature product – éclairs filled with light chantilly instead of the usual custard.

And honestly, that’s what makes them different.

They have a lot of different flavors

You can eat them there or grab some to go

I’m no expert, but the éclairs here feel softer, lighter, and less heavy than the classic French version. You’ll find a lot of flavors too – chocolate, caramel, lemon, red fruits…

The best part? They also have mini éclairs, so you can try a few different ones (or all of them, like we did 😅). We actually ate a couple at the table and then ended up buying a whole box to take with us. Not one regret.

The pastry shop is right in the center of Porto, but a lot of people still walk past without realizing how special this historical place actually is. So don’t skip it. And if you can, try to go when they’re freshly made.

9. Half Rabbit by Bordalo II

Porto, Portugal-Half Rabbit by Bordalo II
Half Rabbit by Bordalo II is among the best hidden gems in Porto

If you find yourself wandering around the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the river, consider stopping by the Half Rabbit by Bordalo II. It is one of the most unique street art spots in Porto!

Bordalo II is a Portuguese street artist known for creating animals from discarded objects to highlight waste and environmental issues, and this is one of his most photographed works in Porto. We also stopped by and took photos of some of his works in Lisbon.

You can find the rabbit in a small street in Vila Nova de Gaia, just a short walk from the riverfront. The artwork takes up the whole side of a building, so it is hard to miss.

Although many are familiar with this artwork, it is definitely not a famous landmark, but rather a bit of a hidden gem, so it’s worth visiting if you’re in the area!

Location: Half Rabbit by Bordalo II

10. My Coffee Porto

Porto, Portugal-My Coffee Porto
Probably the most scenic coffee shop in Porto
Porto, Portugal-My Coffee Porto
What a view! Sadly, it was raining, so we sat inside.

My Coffee Porto is one of those small, cozy cafés that you only find when you know where to look and wander a bit off the main tourist streets.

Apart from the fact that they serve one of the most delicious specialty coffees in Porto, the most obvious reason that makes them unique is the view! This has to be the most beautiful place to have coffee in Porto!

The coffee shop (it’s actually a proper breakfast spot!) is located in the middle of Escadas do Codeçal stairs, offering a beautiful overlook of the city and the Douro River below.

Could this be the most scenic coffee shop in Porto? I think so!

They offer drinks, toasts, pastries, sandwiches, as well as açai bowls for breakfast and brunch. But because they are tiny, they quickly get crowded, so you may have to wait in line to get a table, unless you arrive before they open.

They only have about 3 or 4 tables outside, so there is competition for the scenic tables. However, they do have more tables inside the café.

If you enjoy specialty coffee or just want to enjoy a charming spot in Porto, definitely add My Coffee Porto to your list. We actually came here twice during our travels.

11. Mercado Bom Sucesso

Mercado Bom Sucesso indoor market with food stalls in Porto, Portugal
Mercado Bom Sucesso is an indoor market filled with food stalls – a perfect place for lunch in Porto!

If you ever wander a bit outside the Porto center, Mercado Bom Sucesso is a great spot to check out. I know this isn’t really a hidden gem for locals, but it definitely felt like one to me as a visitor.

This market was originally built in the 1950s and later renovated into a modern food hall, so what you get today is a mix of history and a more contemporary vibe. It’s bright, spacious, and clean.

We stopped here after visiting Casa da Música, partly because it’s close by, but also because I had heard it’s a good place to actually sit down for lunch and try different Portuguese foods.

We grabbed a few different Portuguese tapas (from different stalls) and a glass of wine, then went upstairs to eat overlooking the whole market. That upper level is such a nice spot – a bit quieter, with a full view of everything below.

Compared to the famous Mercado do Bolhão back in the center of Porto, the experience is very different. Bolhão feels more traditional and busy, where you can buy fresh produce, while Mercado Bom Sucesso feels more set up for sitting down and enjoying your food.

For me, it’s not a must-visit in Porto, but it’s a really good option if you want something to eat but don’t know exactly what you’re in the mood for. Here, you can just wander along the food stalls and pick whatever looks good.

Location: Mercado Bom Sucesso

12. Passeio das Fontainhas

Porto view from Passeio das Fontainhas
Passeio das Fontainhas street offers spectacular views of the Douro River and the Dom Luís I Bridge

Passeio das Fontainhas is a quiet street running along the hillside just outside the main tourist routes, and the views over the Douro River are really beautiful from here.

From here, you get a wide look at the river, the colorful houses on both sides, and the arches of the bridge in the distance. The best part of this street? It is not crowded like the popular places in Porto center, so you can come here any time to enjoy the picturesque views.

It’s also the perfect place for a leisurely stroll! Even better if you grab a box of Porto’s delicious pastel de natas to snack on while enjoying the views! Good views + delicious snack + cool photos = time well spent in Porto!

Location: Passeio das Fontainhas

13. A Pérola do Bolhão

This historical building is one of the most beautiful and unique storefronts in Porto!

Located right across from Mercado do Bolhão, A Pérola do Bolhão, one of the oldest grocery stores in Porto, is one of those spots you could easily miss… but once you notice it, you’ll probably stop straight away.

The facade is the main reason.

It’s covered in detailed azulejo tiles in an Art Nouveau style, showing scenes linked to spice trade, coffee, and tea. Because of those cute tiles, to me, this place feels very Porto!

Not your traditional grocery store in Porto

The shop was founded in 1917 by António Rodrigues Reis, and it still feels like a small piece of old Porto that hasn’t really changed much since then. At least, the exterior.

Inside, it’s a traditional grocery store selling local goods like cured meats, cheeses, canned seafood, spices, wine, and local sweets. I’d say it’s worth stepping in for a quick look, but this might also be a more expensive store than others.

However, the beautiful facade alone makes it worth stopping. For me, this is exactly the kind of hidden gem in Porto I love – not a big attraction, just a small detail that adds to the beautiful character of the city.

Happy exploring!

I think I’ve covered all the best hidden places you shouldn’t miss, so I hope this blog post helps you explore Porto beyond the obvious. Take your time, wander a bit without a plan, and enjoy the quieter, more authentic corners of this beautiful city. Happy exploring!
