1. El Hierro Sabinar

El Hierro Sabinar is the most famous tree in El Hierro island and also a popular Instagram spot. This special juniper tree is fighting the permanent all-year-round Trade winds that blow in the same direction all the time.

So the tree is crooked because of that. You can drive almost all the road to the tree, however, the last kilometers are on a bumpy dirt road. If you take it slow you will get to the tree. Only the last 200 meters were too bad to drive, so we hiked.

2. El Roque de La Bonanza

Roque de La Bonanza has to be the most famous rock formation and one of the most famous Instagram spots in El Hierro.

It is a distinctive natural volcanic rock formation near the coast in the East of El Hierro. To some, it may even look like an animal-shaped rock formation.

If you come here during low tide you can get down to the water level (there is a small path down from the road that leads to the water). If you come during high tide then it still will be a beautiful view up from the coast.

3. Mirador de La Peña

Mirador de La Peña is a viewpoint above the cliff overlooking the West side of the island. The difference between the valley and the clifftop is about 1000 meters, so it is a dramatic view to observe.

There is a building at the viewpoint with a restaurant in it where you can enjoy some local cuisine.

The mastermind behind the idea of the building was the famous Canarian architect César Manrique. He strived to combine nature and manmade art so his creations are always very interesting to see.

4. Stone arch of Charco Manso

This was one of the most beautifully shaped stone arches in El Hierro. Located in the far North of the island it is one of the remotest Instagram spots in El Hierro. But definitely one of the most beautiful ones as well!

It is better to come here more on the low tide side as the waves could get too dangerous for you to get a closer look at the arch. It has a beautiful natural pool next to it as well as caves and holes to explore.

5. Mirador de Jinama

Mirador de Jinama is another amazing viewpoint overlooking the West coast of El Hierro. There is a glass platform where you can walk on and get a beautiful shot above the valley.

I really recommend going there during the sunset. We were especially lucky to have clouds in the valley so it looked like we were hanging in the air above the clouds. It was pretty magical! You can park your car at the side of the road next to the viewpoint.

6. Charco Azul

Charco Azul is one of the best places to go for a swim in El Hierro. This area is full of smaller and bigger natural volcanic pools and is very accessible at the same time.

Here you will find beautiful caves, archways, and different volcanic rock formations. This is definitely a must-visit place in El Hierro! Make sure to come here during low tide!

7. Red-colored Campo de Lucha

One of the most unique Instagram spots in El Hierro is Campo de Lucha. It is a circular stadium in red color with a beautiful cliff background which makes this a beautiful photo spot.

The stadium is normally open and anyone can enter there. There are a couple of parking places nearby next to the ‘Bar Restaurante Joapira’.

8. Arco de las Puntas

Arco de las Puntas is a long, beautiful volcanic rock arch that stretches over a small beach in Las Puntas. It is located in a beautiful area with little coves and different volcanic formations that you should definitely check out!

If you come here during low tide you can get down inside a volcanic tube (there are stairs leading down from the walking path) to a small beach and take a photo of the arch from below.

9. La Llania forest trail

La Llanía is one of the most popular walking routes that goes through the forests of El Hierro. You will find many somewhat crooked trees covered with moss here. It is spooky at times. I imagine it would be even more mystical during foggy weather.

There are multiple options for this trail and you will see arrows pointing in different directions along the way. We chose the Orange route which was 6 kilometers long and took us 1h30min to complete.

10. Punta del Pozo volcanic arches

One of my favorite hidden gems and also Instagram spots in El Hierro island is definitely the Punta del Pozo viewpoint with two volcanic arches for a great photo.

One of the arches is right next to the viewpoint and you can observe it from the side if you are standing at the viewpoint.

However, the other one is right under the viewpoint. You have to descend to the beach in order to see it.

There is a hole in the seaside cliff and you can get a beautiful shot of the nearby rock formation in the ocean looking through the hole. It is best to go there during low tide.

11. The seaside promenade in Tamaduste

Tamaduste was one of my favorite towns in El Hierro. There is a beautiful and gigantic natural swimming pool in the middle of the town with a beautiful promenade along the waterfront.

It is not completely separated from the ocean so the water level changes dramatically when the high tide or low tide comes. People use this spot for water activities or simply for walking along the promenade. There are also multiple nice restaurants at the side of the promenade.

12. Camino Jinama trail

One of the most famous trails and also one of the most popular activities to do in El Hierro is the Camino Jinama trail. It is an old route that the local people walked all the time.

What makes it special is the short distance (it is only 3-4 kilometers long) and the huge vertical difference between the start and the finish of the trail (about 885 vertical meters).

One of my favorite spots along the trail was at the top of the cliff where there is a distinctive sharp rock formation overlooking the valley.

13. Arco de la Tosca

Arco de la Tosca is probably the longest stone arch you will see in El Hierro. It is also one of the best places to watch the sunset as the arch is located on the West Coast.

It is also very easy to get to as you can drive a car right next to it. There is a parking lot followed by a short path to the arch. It is truly magnificent!

14. Campanario de Joapira

One of the most interesting spots in El Hierro is Campanario de Joapira. It is a church bell tower sitting atop a red volcano – Montaña Joapira. The bell tower is located at the same spot as Campo de Lucha, the red-colored stadium.

It is very distinctive as the red volcano stands out from the surrounding area. You can access it for free. You can either climb up to it or take a nice photo from afar.

15. La Maceta natural volcanic pools

Natural swimming pools in La Maceta are amongst the best spots for swimming in El Hierro island. There are multiple huge swimming pools that are connected to each other, as well as a big parking lot.

This is also a great Instagram spot in El Hierro as you can get beautiful views of the ocean and the crystal-clear pool or take beautiful photos with reflections in the water when the water is calm. This pool also looks like a beautiful infinity pool if you choose the right photo angle!

16. Mirador de Isora

Mirador de Isora is one of those hidden gems in El Hierro! This viewpoint overlooks the East side of the island and is a great spot for photos. It is also a nice place to take a break while traveling around the island and have a picnic as there are many seating places here.

17. Homenaje a La Bajada sculptures

One of the most unique and interesting spots in El Hierro is these white sculptures that you can find on Google Maps as ‘Homenaje a La Bajada’. These a bit weird sculptures offer unique photo possibilities for visitors.

There is nothing outstanding about the viewpoint however the look and shapes of the sculptures are quite unusual. You can park your car at the side of the road at the viewpoint.

18. Giant arches at Punta de la Sal

Punta de la Sal is a unique area on the West coast of El Hierro. It is full of unique volcanic rock formations including sea caves, arches, and many other different formations. There is a path going along the coastline for anyone to enjoy this beautiful scenery.

It is amongst the best spots to watch the sunset as well. I really recommend grabbing some snacks and drinks, going before the sunset, and checking out the area followed by the sunset at the end of the day.

19. Charco los Sargos

Charco de los Sargos is another amazing swimming spot in El Hierro. And also, it is another amazing spot to enjoy different volcanic rock formations like volcanic pools, caves, and arches.

If I had to choose a place to go for a swim, I would definitely choose this one as the volcanic pool is deep and big enough even during low tide. Plus you can explore the caves and arches while swimming and take beautiful photos as a nice keepsake from your time in El Hierro!
