The lighthouse is one of the most iconic Instagram spots in Puerto Morelos

This beautiful leaning lighthouse at the shores of the Caribbean Sea is a symbol of strength and resilience in Puerto Morelos. It is one of the most unique places and amongst the most iconic Instagram spots in the Yucatan peninsula.

The lighthouse was hit by a hurricane in 1967 that left it tilted like you see in the photo. Although a new lighthouse was built next to it, this one was left standing there as a symbol of the resilience of this charming small fishing town.

Apart from colorful signs with the names of the towns and cities, places in the Yucatan peninsula are also known for street art. You can stroll any city or town all around the peninsula and you will find murals everywhere.

Puerto Morelos is not an exception. There are countless murals on the walls, inside restaurants, and on shops visible around the town. Although Puerto Morelos isn’t the most colorful town around here, we still saw some pretty cool paintings.

4. Puerto Morelos Dock

One of the coolest Instagram spots in Puerto Morelos is the dock (‘malecon’). It is one of the gathering places in Puerto Morelos where people socialize, sit by the ocean, and just relax.

We visited the dock many times during our stay in Puerto Morelos, including one time when we woke up to watch the sunrise there. It was memorable as we watched the fishermen take their boats out into the sea as the sun rose over the horizon.

The dock is a cool place for photos as well. There was this Puerto Morelos wooden frame (first photo) right next to the leaning lighthouse which, I think, was meant to frame the lighthouse (but the lighthouse looked too big).

And then there was the wooden dock itself stretching into the sea with boats tied to it. Also, at the beginning of the wooden dock, there was a huge cement frame called – Window to the Sea. Come here for the sunrise to get golden photos!

Puerto Morelos has a short but beautiful palm-tree-lined seaside promenade where you can sit on one of the benches and observe all the fishing boats floating in the water and people chilling by the sea.

I found these beautifully painted cement benches with illustrations to be especially photogenic. The one pictured above was near Puerto Morelos letters. Thanks to its tropical background, it was one of my favorite Instagram spots in Puerto Morelos!

We visited many cafés and restaurants while staying in Puerto Morelos and I noticed that the majority of them had beautiful artwork either inside the establishments or outside the buildings.

They love to make places beautiful here. For example, El Nicho restaurant had a whole interior full of colorful murals, and there was a beautiful ‘All we need is love’ painting on the wall at Mangata restaurant.

However, I especially enjoyed the deer artwork at Lola and Moya restaurant and the beautiful exterior of the coffee shop Geoholistik. If you ever go to some of the cafes or restaurants in Puerto Morelos, pay attention to the interior!

Puerto Morelos is known to have a long stretch of white-sand beaches lined along the coastline. And, more importantly, not a single hotel or beach club is blocking the access – you can easily walk to the beach from the center of the town!

These charming tropical beaches are a great place for a photo in Puerto Morelos!

Most beachgoers enjoy the beach up North from the town center where all the top beach clubs line along the coastline but if you like the buzz then look for a place closer to the Leaning Lighthouse.

Mi Pueblo Casa Hokum is a small unique shopping mall in the center of Puerto Morelos. It features various local souvenir shops as well as a restaurant and an inner garden with massive trees and plants.

You don’t have to buy anything or eat at the restaurant in order to visit the premises!

The area is also decorated with wooden gates and creative roof structures, with benches and garden lights hanging all around. That beautiful wooden gate is definitely one of my favorite Instagram spots in Puerto Morelos!

Overall we really liked the relaxed vibes of this town. Especially if you compare it with the hustle and bustle of Cancun, Tulum, or other famous tourist hotspots around the Yucatan peninsula. Plus Puerto Morelos is very walkable – everything is nearby!

Happy exploring!

The charming fishing village of Puerto Morelos is a more tranquil alternative to its busier neighbors like Cancun and Playa del Carmen. We very much enjoyed the town through its pristine beaches, food, and vibrant culture.

Besides our multi-day stay in Puerto Morelos, we also spent a couple of months traveling around the Yucatán Peninsula, including the states of Yucatán and Quintana Roo, and exploring all the corners of this beautiful peninsula.

From white-sand beaches to dark underground cenotes, and ancient pyramids – there’s just so much to see! I hope you enjoy your time there as much as we did and I hope you get some travel inspiration from this blog post for your travels! Happy travels!
