Turns out, people still live in cave houses there, and you’ll find cafés and small shops set right under those huge rock overhangs, which actually looks preeeetttyyy crazy, but is very normal for the locals.

In this blog post, I’ll share all the best things to do in Setenil de las Bodegas, from the iconic cave streets like Calle Cuevas del Sol and Calle Cuevas de la Sombra to viewpoints, more hidden spots, and tips to help you plan your visit. Enjoy!

This small village is full of charming corners

Setenil de las Bodegas, or simply Setenil, is a village of less than 3,000 residents in the Province of Cádiz. It is one of the most unusual places and one of the famous white villages to visit in Southern Spain.

Want a fun fact? Setenil’s name actually comes from the Latin phrase ‘septem nihil,’ which means ‘seven times nothing,’ referring to how many attempts it took for Christian forces to finally conquer Setenil from the Moors.

This small town is famous for its cave houses, but what makes Setenil unique is that instead of digging caves into the rock, people here built houses around the natural rock formations, so, for the most part, the cliffs basically act as roofs.

Setenil de las Bodegas is located a 25-minute drive from Ronda, so most visitors combine a day trip to both these locations in one day. If that’s you, then spend most of the day in Ronda and then come to Setenil for an hour or two.

1. Start your visit at Calle Cuevas del Sol

Calle Cuevas del Sol in Setenil de las Bodegas cave village in Spain
Visiting the sunny street Calle Cuevas del Sol is one of the top things to do in Setenil de las Bodegas

One of the best ways to begin exploring Setenil de las Bodegas is with Calle Cuevas del Sol, one of the two most famous streets in the village.

Calle Cuevas del Sol (Street of the Sun Caves) runs along the tiny Trejo River and is full of cafés, tapas bars, and small restaurants with tables sitting directly under the massive rock overhangs.

If you feel like sitting down and relaxing with a drink or snacks, this is the place to do that! After all, having drinks and snacks while sitting under that massive rock overhang is one of those bucket list things to do in Setenil de las Bodegas!

Tip! Try tapas at Bar Frasquito on Calle Cuevas del Sol!

Also, do you see in the photos how all those houses are built under the cliff, and the cliff serves as both the roof and one of the walls for those houses? That is so cool to see.

Calle Cuevas del Sol is also a great spot to get your first photos of Setenil, since it really shows what the village is all about – everyday life happening right under the rock.

Usually, this street is a super busy place, and we ended up here many times during our stay, including one morning when we walked over before the locals opened their shops and long before the crowds started to arrive to take some photos. Such a unique place!

2. Walk over to the iconic Calle Cuevas de la Sombra

Calle Cuevas de la Sombra is the most famous street in Setenil de las Bodegas

Once you go through the part with the rock overhang on Calle Cuevas del Sol, you’ll get to a small bridge connecting both sides of the river.

It’s time to cross the bridge and check out the second of the two most beautiful streets in Setenil de las Bodegas – Calle Cuevas de la Sombra, or Street of the Shadow Caves.

Calle Cuevas de la Sombra is the best photo spot in Setenil, because this is the place where you’ll find that iconic rock covering the whole street that you’ve probably seen all over social media.

The street is short, and the section where the rock completely covers the street is also only about 100 meters long, so it is easy to check out. The challenge is to take a nice photo, because this street is also a pretty busy one.

What do you think of this unique architecture?

Shops and cafés under the rocky overhang

Because we stayed a couple of nights in Setenil, we were able to walk here early in the morning and get photos without crowds. But it’s just as impressive when you see people walking under it – it really shows how low the rock is!

Don’t forget to walk through that ‘tunnel’ and check out this street section from the other side! Under the rock, you will find whitewashed houses, pastry shops, souvenir shops, and cafés, which are all squeezed tightly into the rock walls.

We actually came back here for lunch another day and sat inside in Cafetería-Bar Sol y Sombra café right under this rock. Pretty cool!

If you are traveling around Southern Spain and looking for photogenic places, then Calle Cuevas de la Sombra in Setenil de las Bodegas is one of the most iconic Instagram spots you will find in Andalusia. A must-see place!

3. Go shopping in the village’s deepest cave, Cueva Alta

Unexpectedly, one of my favorite things to do in Setenil de las Bodegas was shopping in Cueva Alta, known as the deepest cave house in the village.

This gastro-bar and souvenir-shop type of place is perfect if you are looking to escape the crowds down by the cave streets, but also want to find some local souvenirs and products.

But you can walk in even if you’re just curious and don’t plan to buy anything.

Inside, the cave is packed with local products like wine, beer, chocolate, sweets, cheese, and even some beauty items. We ended up picking up a few things here, including local specialties like Payoyo cheese, which is definitely worth trying if you haven’t had it before.

There are also a few tables inside, so you can sit down and have a drink, like a glass of wine with snacks, like a selection of local cheeses.

This is also the perfect opportunity to see how these cave houses look from the inside.

If you have time to wander around the village, you’ll notice that some locals open their houses and let you see the interior for a small donation. You can either do that or come to a shop like this.

4. See Setenil from above at Mirador del Carmen

Mirador del Carmen is the best viewpoint in Setenil

After exploring the cave streets and cave houses, it is worth heading up to Mirador del Carmen, the village’s most beautiful viewpoint, to see Setenil de las Bodegas from above.

The viewpoint sits on a cliff right in the middle of the village, which gives you a completely different perspective – you can clearly see the contrast between the highest houses on the hill and the lowest ones deep in the gorge under the rocks.

When we visited, there were also the “Setenil” letters here, so it’s a great photo spot.

It is a bit of a walk uphill to get there, but nothing too difficult – you can take the stairs from Calle Cuevas del Sol up to the very top of the cliff. The amazing views are definitely worth it.

The viewpoint is also much quieter than the busy streets below, so it is a nice place to take a break and just enjoy the view. I always like seeing places from above, so this was easily one of my favorite spots to visit in Setenil.

5. Find Setenil’s secret street, Calle Herreria

Now it’s time for some places off the beaten path in Setenil!

While the majority of visitors never explore the beautiful village beyond the two famous streets, Calle Cuevas del Sol and Calle Cuevas de la Sombra, there’s much more to see in Setenil.

Another street worth checking out in Setenil de las Bodegas is Calle Herrería, which is often described as one of the most beautiful streets in the village and in Andalusia.

It is quite different from the main cave streets – this one is super narrow, has steps, and leads uphill. But it also has that unique rock overhang this village is known for, so this is another great spot for photos in Setenil.

It is so narrow, you probably won’t even notice it if you’re not paying attention, because there is a much wider street that runs parallel to Calle Herrería. See the location below so that you know where to look!

The street leads uphill in the direction of Plaza de Andalucía square, and that’s where we want to go!

6. Take a photo at Bésame en este Rincón

While you are at Calle Herrería, there is one place you must stop by!

One of the most charming things about Setenil de las Bodegas is that the village is full of tiny corners hidden in narrow streets that are decorated with poetic texts and cute flower pots.

The most famous place is located right in the middle of Calle Herrería, and it is called Bésame en este rincón.

The name translates to “Kiss me in this corner,” and it is the perfect photo spot in Setenil de las Bodegas.

It is a super cozy and photogenic spot that just begs for a photo, whether you are traveling solo or with someone special.

When we visited, a few people were taking pictures, and there was a small line, but it was worth the wait.

However, this is not the only place in Setenil de las Bodegas with a cute text and charming flower pots. If you have time to wander around the adjacent streets, you’ll find even more of them!

During our stay, we stumbled upon six such places, but there may or may not be more. Looking for these picturesque corners was one of my favorite things to do in Setenil de las Bodegas!

Of course, not all of them are so cute, so take a look at my pictures and decide which ones are worth visiting! And don’t worry about Spanish – all of those inscriptions have a positive meaning!

Here are translations for the ones we found (click on the link to see their locations on Google Maps):

So, are they quotes? Not really. From what I understand, they are like love notes, supposedly creating a Love Route (Ruta del Amor) around the village, inviting visitors to explore Setenil’s lesser-known corners.

I guess it worked! Keep your eyes open so you don’t miss them!

7. Climb the tower of the Castillo de Setenil de las Bodegas

Okay, so remember I told you to follow the narrow Calle Herrería all the way up to Plaza de Andalucía square? Yes, so, once you are there, you are pretty close to the highest point in the whole village – the tower of the Castillo de Setenil de las Bodegas!

The best part? You can climb up to the tower and see the whole village at your feet!

The Castillo de Setenil de las Bodegas was originally built during the Arab era in Southern Spain, most likely sometime around the 12th century.

Building fortresses on top of hills wasn’t random. From there, they could control the surrounding valley and keep an eye on any approaching enemies.

Only part of the original castle still exists today – the Torre del Homenaje tower. A lot of the fortress was destroyed or rebuilt after the Christian conquest, so what you see now is just a small piece of what used to be something much bigger.

Honestly, I didn’t come here for the fortress or the castle – I came here for the breathtaking views, and we did get them! You get a full look over the white houses, the gorge, and the countryside around the village.

It’s also one of the few spots where you can really see how unique Setenil’s layout is from above.

Entrance to the tower, including a Moorish cistern below it and a small museum next to the tower, was 2 EUR per person when we visited.

Tip! If you don’t want to spend any money or you’re visiting outside opening hours, don’t skip this spot. Right next to the tower, there’s a viewpoint, Mirador del Lizón, overlooking the village, and the views are almost just as good from there.

To get there, start at Plaza de Andalucía and look for a small street heading uphill called Calle Villa. After the climb, you’ll pass through a white arch, and there’ll be a small garden on your right.

Follow the stairs through the garden, and they’ll take you straight up to the viewpoint.

It was very quiet compared to the lower streets, because not many travelers wander this far into the village. At this viewpoint, you will also find one of the picture-perfect Love Route corners – a bench with the “The best of Setenil is right here, and it is you” phrase.

8. Explore Calcetas & Jabonería streets on your way back

After seeing Setenil from above, I highly recommend taking a different route back down – along Calle Calcetas and Calle Jabonería.

It’s a bit of a hidden gem in Setenil, because most people just walk through the historical center, but this area goes a little outside of it (or around it?).

So, once you’re done with the castle, you need to find Calle Calcetas street and then head down the hill, leaving the castle and the old town behind you.

The street then bends around the hill and leads down to the river until you reach Calle Jabonería.

Please see this approximate walking route I’ve created on Google Maps.

Why walk like this? You’ll see one of my favorite streets in Setenil de las Bodegas. Only some tourists find this route, and, for the most part, it stays hidden from the masses.

But what’s more important is that you’ll find those same rock overhangs here too – just without the crowds! Sounds like a big win to me. What do you think?

Once you get down the hill, you’ll have to cross the bridge across the river and continue along Calle Jabonería, which is another street built under rocks.

Most people stick to the famous spots like Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra, so this part of the village gets overlooked. If you love to explore places, then consider adding this route to your itinerary!

9. Have lunch in a cave restaurant (or under rocks)

One of the best things to do in Setenil de las Bodegas is to actually sit down and eat inside one of the cave restaurants. It’s not just about the food – it’s the whole experience of being inside a space carved into the rock.

The most popular lunch spots are along Calle Cuevas del Sol and Calle Cuevas de la Sombra, which you’ve probably already seen. Some places have terraces outside under the rock overhangs, while others have tables inside – just pick what feels more like your vibe.

Menus here are usually simple and local. Think tapas, grilled meats, cured ham, cheese, and Andalusian classics. This is not the place for anything super fancy, but that’s kind of the point.

One thing to know – these places can get busy, especially around lunchtime.

I recommend trying tapas at Bar Frasquito, Lucia Restaurant, La Cueva de Isabelina, or Bar La Escueva on Calle Cuevas del Sol. Or Cafeteria-Bar Sol y Sombra under the rock on Calle Cuevas de la Sombra.

Another great place is La Telera 1860 restaurant with a terrace above the river Río Trejo.

If you can, try the local Andalusian cheese, Payoyo. It’s made from the milk of Payoya goats and Merina sheep from Villaluenga del Rosario and other nearby villages in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. It’s a true Spanish delicacy.

10. Hike up to the Balcony of Setenil de las Bodegas

Calle San Sebastián

Ok, I’ve been leading you through the village and to multiple viewpoints, promising amazing views of Setenil. But, in all honesty, the best view of Setenil is actually from the south side of the village.

I know, because I saw it! Let me explain – if you look at the village from the castle, you see a whole bunch of whitewashed houses cascading down the hill to the bottom of the gorge.

But if you look from the south side, you get a view of a bunch of whitewashed houses cascading down the hill to the bottom of the gorge and a panoramic view of the castle ruins on top of a hill, along with the Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation next to it.

The view from the south side is waaaayyy more scenic! So the question for you is – would you like to take a walk after lunch to burn off some of those calories? If yes, then let’s go!

There are three levels of streets at different altitudes where you can get panoramic views of the town. The first is Calle Cantarería Alta.

Getting to Calle Cantarería Alta is easy – just start at Cuevas de la Sombra (street under the rocks), walk uphill along Calle Cantarería Baja, and then turn onto Calle Cantarería Alta in the direction that leads further uphill.

There’s no specific observation deck to stop by – it’s just a street with continuous views over the village. Then, from Calle Cantarería Alta, you can walk a small pedestrian street up to Calle San Sebastián.

Calle San Sebastián is one of the main streets in Setenil and also has some roadside parking spots, so many visitors leave their cars here and then go down to explore the village. But this street also has the best views of Setenil!

The whole streetside feels like one big balcony with panoramic views. As you can see, we visited in April, when the beautiful Jacaranda trees were blooming like crazy. So gorgeous!

And finally, from Calle San Sebastián, you can turn onto Calle Ventosilla Alta, the third and highest street in Setenil with panoramic views. This is like seeing the village from a bird’s eye view!

Yes, there is a specific lookout point called the “Balcony of Setenil de las Bodegas”, but again, the whole street has amazing village views, so don’t stress about it.

Whew, this was a workout, right?!

Unique bonus spots in Setenil de las Bodegas

I can’t let you leave without mentioning to you these two unique spots in Setenil de las Bodegas!

One of the unique spots worth passing by in Setenil is a Mudéjar-style door on Calle San Benito. It’s a decorative door for a private house that really stands out among the whitewashed houses.

Mudéjar style mixes Islamic and Christian architectural designs, and is a reflection of the long history of Islamic influence in Andalusia, which has shaped cities and towns like Setenil.

Another spot worth checking out in Setenil is the Ermita de San Benito, a small chapel in the middle of the old town. It dates back to the 14th–15th century and has been part of the village for centuries.

The building we see today is much younger, though. It has simple white walls with cute yellow accents. The chapel has long been important to local traditions, especially for the brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno.

Tip! If you happen to visit Setenil de las Bodegas during the Easter Holidays (a massive event in Spain), their traditional street procession starts right here at Ermita de San Benito.
