1. Take a photo of the Valldemossa skyline

If you travel to Valldemossa from Palma de Mallorca you will probably drive MA-1110 road which then bends around the village, goes right through it, and then continues along the coastline of western Mallorca.
The main road MA-1110 offers some of the best viewpoints of the beautiful Valldemossa skyline, with its ochre-colored houses sitting on a hillside and church spires piercing the mountainous landscape. The views are magical!

There are two main spots along the road worth a stop. Let’s call them Mirador de Valldemossa and Mirador de Valldemossa II as shown on Google Maps (locations below). In my opinion, the best viewpoint is Mirador de Valldemossa II.
These viewpoints are small pockets next to the road. If you want to make a stop while driving a car, then go to Mirador de Valldemossa II as there is more parking space. We left our car at the parking lot in the village and walked to the viewpoints on foot.
Location: Mirador de Valldemossa II – Mirador de Valldemossa
2. Try the taste of Valldemossa – Coca de Patata!

A trip to Valldemossa will never be complete without trying one of the culinary symbols of Valldemossa – coca de patata. It is a soft, airy, and fluffy bun made of potatoes, flour, sugar, and eggs.
This pastry has been around for many centuries in Valldemossa. We tried ‘cocas’ many times during our visit to this picturesque town. Coca was sweet and soft but, honestly, I could not taste the potatoes at all!
You will find them in every bakery in Valldemossa. We went to Pastisseria Ca’n Molinas, a traditional local bakery that has been around for about 100 years. Go to Forn i Pastisseria Ca’n Molinas if you want a café with tables to sit down.
Although this pastry is eaten all around Mallorca, it is more associated with Valldemossa probably because of the fertile soil around Valldemossa which makes this place ideal for growing potatoes.
Location: Pastisseria Ca’n Molinas – Forn i Pastisseria Ca’n Molinas
3. Stroll around the Palace of King Sancho

One of the historical landmarks to visit in Valldemossa is the Palace of King Sancho. Located on a hill in the heart of Valldemossa this early 14th-century medieval palace was built as a summer residence for King Sancho I of Mallorca.
For me, it felt like stepping back in time. The palace is rather small and you can easily visit all the rooms in under 1 hour. You won’t see the grandeur of Versailles here tho. It is an old medieval building but it was cool to see how they lived here centuries ago.

The Palace of King Sancho boasts beautiful Gothic architecture in its historic halls and carefully preserved rooms. Interestingly, King Sancho suffered from asthma, and the palace was built here because the climate conditions offered him some relief.
There is a small theater inside the palace where you can listen to short concerts (included in the price). The palace is located next to a monastery and a church and a visit to them is included in the same entry ticket.
Location: Palace of King Sancho – Entrance Ticket
4. Wander through the halls of the Carthusian Monastery

Included in the same entry ticket you buy for the Palace of King Sancho is a visit to the Carthusian Monastery in Valldemossa right next door to the palace. It is known as La Cartuja de Valldemossa or Valldemossa Charterhouse.
The monastery dates back to the same 14th century as the palace. Although it was built as a residence, it was later converted into a monastery for the Carthusian monks. Today you can wander through a cloister, a church as well as the monk’s cells.

The monastery boasts Gothic and Baroque architectural elements. But the most famous fact about it is that the monastery hosted the famous Polish composer Frédéric Chopin for years during the 19th century when he composed multiple works.
You can even access the rooms where Frédéric Chopin stayed for an extra fee. At that time the rooms were for rent and many artists used this place as a retreat. A well-known Fresh writer George Sand also spent time here.
The monastery and the cloister are quite simple, but the history oozes from this place. One of my favorite spots was the chemistry room (it also served as a pharmacy). You can also access the church, which boasts gorgeous frescoes on the ceiling.

5. Stop for a coffee with a view and stay for the cakes

I have to say – I’m a big sucker for charming coffee shops and specialty coffee. When I find both of these things combined I’m in heaven. Barbaflorida cafè in Valldemossa was exactly a place where I would go sip coffee every day if I lived there.
The charming café is located in the village center next to the Plaça Cartoixa square. It is the best coffee shop and one of the best breakfast and brunch places in Mallorca serving fresh cakes and dishes made from mostly local organic ingredients.

We came here for proper breakfast so I got a cup of caffè latte and an avocado toast with cheese. And then comes the best part – the lemon poppy seed cake! It was heavenly and I still dream about it months after, haha.
If that’s not enough to convince you to try this cafè then look at the photos. Do you see the view? Yes, you can sit at a table while sipping coffee and looking through the window. The main street, the trees, the mountains – it’s all there!
Location: Barbaflorida cafè
6. See the king’s view at Sa Miranda Des Lledoners

Do you want to see the view King Sancho I of Mallorca saw when he was staying in his Valldemossa residence? Then head to Sa Miranda Des Lledoners – one of the best Valldemossa viewpoints located in the old town.
The viewpoint overlooks one part of Valldemossa village with the spire of the Iglesia Católica de San Bartolomé church stretching over the rest of Valldemossa’s rooftops.

The iconic viewpoint is located right next to the walls of the Palace of King Sancho I of Mallorca meaning you get to see the exact view the king saw when he was looking through the window of his summer residence.
Checking out different viewpoints was one of my favorite things to do in Valldemossa. Apart from the picturesque views you get from the main road MA-1110, this viewpoint is probably the second-best place to see Valldemossa.
Location: Sa Miranda Des Lledoners
7. Stroll through the King’s gardens – Jardins Rei Joan Carles

Hidden behind the Carthusian Monastery is a small but wonderful oasis in Valldemossa – king’s gardens or Jardins Rei Joan Carles named after one of Spain’s most recent monarchs, Juan Carlos I.
It is a public garden and this space is accessible for free throughout the day. Anyone can come here and take a stroll around the alleys and pathways lined with greenery, bushes, and trees.

We stumbled around here after visiting the monastery – it is a nice place to catch some shade and fresh air and hide away from the crowds usually descending on Valldemossa later in the day.
The garden features multiple sculptures, a fountain as well as colorful flowers and lush greenery. If you are looking for a bench under a tree to hide away from the buzz, then this is the place. But don’t expect much, the garden is quite simple.
Location: Jardins Rei Joan Carles
8. Hang out at the main square in Valldemossa – Plaça Cartoixa

Plaça Cartoixa located in front of the monastery and the king’s palace is the main square in Valldemossa. This is the place where all life happens. Usually, it is very lively filled with tables, chairs, and crowds of visitors.
Plaça Cartoixa is lined with shops, cafes, restaurants, and stores. The square is a great place to hang out with others, sit down at a table, and drink a glass of wine or grab an ice cream and finish it while people-watching.
Location: Plaça Cartoixa
9. Stroll down the main street of Valldemossa

One of the must-do things to do in Valldemossa is walking down the main street that goes through the old town. Valldemossa is quite small so it is quite an easy task but packed with charming cafes, boutique shops, and cute corners.
You can start your walk at the gardens of King Juan Carlos I, then continue along Carrer Uetam which later turns into Carrer de la Rosa. The street will take you to Plaça de la Constitució square.

Here you can either head straight to the Church of San Bartolomé or make a detour and walk there by Plaça Constitució Street, Carrer de na Búger Street, and then Carrer Rectoria or by Carreró de la Amargura Street.
You will then find yourself at the Church of San Bartolomé in Valldemossa. This picturesque route takes you along shops, bakeries, cafes, and some of the most charming streets in Valldemossa.
Location: Carrer Uetam – Carrer de la Rosa – Plaça Constitució – Carrer de na Búger – Carreró de la Amargura
10. Peek inside the Church of San Bartolomé Valldemossa

Located in Plaça de Santa Catalina Thomas in Valldemossa is a small but charming church – Church of San Bartolomé in Valldemossa. The Gothic and Baroque church was built far back in the 13th century but was reconstructed in the 18th century.
This church is one of the most prominent features in the Valldemossa skyline as the church spire pierces the air far above the rest of the village rooftops. This is the church you saw from the king’s viewpoint – Sa Miranda Des Lledoners.

The historic church features beautiful frescoes and religious artifacts so it is worth visiting if the church is open. When we visited the door was open so we could easily peek inside the imposing building.
But the reason we actually came to this church is located right next to it. The adjacent street to the church, Carrer Rectoria, is known as the most beautiful street in Valldemossa and one of the most beautiful streets in Mallorca. Check it out!
Location: Església de Sant Bartomeu
11. Take a photo at the iconic Carrer Rectoria

Exploring narrow alleys and charming streets was one of my favorite things to do in Valldemossa. If you are into picturesque alleys then you have to make a mandatory stop at Carrer Rectoria – often famed as the most beautiful street in Mallorca.
Hidden next to the church, Carrer Rectoria street is lined with traditional Mallorcan honey-colored stone houses adorned with colorful flower pots and plants. The street embodies the quintessential Mallorcan village charm.

Carrer Rectoria is the perfect place for photos in Valldemossa. Together with its neighboring streets, Carrer de na Búger and Carreró de la Amargura, the area near Carrer Rectoria offers plenty of charming corners and cute photo spots.
Carrer Rectoria also hosts a small chapel dedicated to Saint Catalina Thomas – the only saint on the island of Mallorca. The chapel is located in the same address where Saint Catalina Thomas was born.
Location: Carrer Rectoria
12. Try traditional Mallorcan tapas in Valldemossa

One of my favorite things to do wherever I travel is to try local foods. Mallorca surprised us with many local delicacies, so I recommend finding a tapas restaurant in Valldemossa and savoring some of the local specialties.
There are many great restaurants in Valldemossa offering dishes from the local cuisine like Es Taller Valldemossa, Orígens, S´Hort de Cartoixa, Es Roquissar, S’estret, and last but not least – QuitaPenas Valldemossa.

We opted for QuitaPenas Valldemossa which is well-known for its traditional Pa amb oli boards. Pa amb oli, which translates as ‘bread with oil’ is a must-try food in Mallorca.
These crunchy slices of bread drizzled with local Mallorcan olive oil and rich layers of toppings like spreadable Mallorcan sobrasada sausage, Mahón cheese from nearby Menorca island, and other meats and vegetables are truly legendary!
Location: QuitaPenas Valldemossa
13. Stop by the picturesque Deià

Deià, one of the most beautiful towns in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, is a place that calms your mind and inspires which could be the reason it has long attracted famous artists and creatives to its surroundings. See all the top things to do in Deià!
Deià village located just a 10-minute drive away from Valldemossa is known for its picturesque views, charming cafes, and relaxed atmosphere. Many tourists combine a visit to Valldemossa with a visit to Deià right after.

Deià is worth visiting even if you only have time to stop for a couple of minutes before continuing on your journey around the island. There are amazing viewpoints and cafes with panoramic views right along the main road winding through Deià.
If you have more time, I recommend hiking up Deià hill to the Sant Joan de Deià Church and the cemetery next to it for the most scenic views over the surrounding mountains and olive groves. After that, stop by a restaurant for lunch with a view.
Location: Deià

Hi!
Your page on the best things to do in Valldemossa is really helpful.
Would you consider it dangerous to walk along the main road to get to Mirador de Valldemossa II or is there another way to get there by foot?
Thank you !
Hi, Sylvie! Thank you! It didn’t feel dangerous to walk along the road, maybe a bit uncomfortable, especially when there were two cars passing by in both directions. However, it is possible to get to the viewpoint directly from the town if you walk to Hotel Sa Vall, pass it, and then follow a path across the stream and uphill, then you’ll end up exactly at the Mirador de Valldemossa II viewpoint. There was a gate by the hotel when we walked there but it was open and it looked okay to go there.
