Let’s discover the most spectacular caves in Mallorca, one of Spain’s Balearic Islands. This charming Mediterranean island is hiding some truly remarkable wonders underground and visiting caves in Mallorca must be on your Mallorca itinerary!
Exploring caves in Mallorca was one of my favorite things to do on the island. From the crowd favorites Coves del Drach with its underground lake and a live concert to colossal limestone giants at Coves d’Artร , there’s something unique in each of the caves.
We have spent months living in Mallorca and managed to visit more places than any average visitor. I hope this list helps you choose which caves in Mallorca you wish to see. You’ll find them all with photos, descriptions, and locations on the map. Cheers!
1. Coves del Drach

Coves del Drach or Dragon Caves located in the village of Porto Cristo on the east coast of Mallorca are the most famous caves in Spain’s Balearic Islands and probably in all of Spain. These caves have been known to locals since the Middle Ages.
The Drach Caves not only offer spectacular views of impressive rock formations and other hidden treasures but also hide a whole 170-meter-long and 30-meter-wide underground lake named Lake Martel.

As you enter the impressive cave you will first wander around the underground maze and then you will arrive at a large underground hall like an auditorium with seats towards the lake. This is where you will be surprised with a live concert!
There are musicians sitting in a boat and floating around the lake while performing a classical music concert to you. I don’t think it can get wilder than that, can it? After the concert, you have the possibility to jump inside the boat and go on a boat trip!

Lake Martel is one of the largest underground lakes in the world and I felt truly special riding a boat in the very depths of the cave deep underground.
Las Cuevas del Drach caves is one of the main tourist attractions in Mallorca and, understandably, this is a popular destination among tourists so be prepared to go with a crowd. Nevertheless, it is definitely worth visiting!

2. Coves d’Artร

The Coves d’Artร or Artร Caves next to the Bay of Canyamel in the Northeast of Mallorca is a large network of spectacular limestone caves in Mallorca. I have to be honest and say that out of all the caves, these are my favorite caves in Mallorca!
Firstly, there are no hordes of tourists or crowds because you can only see the cave by joining a guided tour. Secondly, the groups are average. I think we were about 20 people in our group which makes it a more intimate experience.

And, finally, the cave itself. I have been to many caves in Mallorca and around Spain and I have never seen something so spectacular as Arta Caves. I felt like I was in an underground city. The halls and galleries are endless and massive.
The stalactites and stalagmites reach as high as 40 meters high towering above our heads. I felt like a dwarf wandering around Moria (fans of The Lord of the Rings will know, haha)!

The whole underground landscape was out of this world. Cuevas de Arta have a rich history and have been known and used by humans since ancient times. Even the father of science fiction, Jules Verne, has visited the caves to draw inspiration.
In addition to the jaw-dropping inside, Caves of Artร also have the most beautiful cave entrance in Mallorca (see photos above). The massive stairway looks like the mouth of a giant. One of the most beautiful places in Mallorca for sure!

3. Coves de Campanet

Hidden in the northern part of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains are impressive caves in Mallorca – Coves de Campanet. They were only discovered in 1945 and since have become a treasured tourist attraction on the island.
Coves de Campanet features large chambers and galleries filled with stalactites and stalagmites. The caves also feature a couple of small underground lakes. Some of the chambers and galleries even have names like ‘Room of the Lake’.

You can walk around by a manmade pathway while checking out all the rock formations up close. It took us about 40 minutes to explore the caves.
What I found interesting about these caves is that there is evidence these caves were inhabited by humans in prehistoric times. There is also a restaurant Ses Coves next to the entrance offering scenic views over the surrounding area.

4. Coves de Gรจnova

Located in the Gรจnova neighborhood near the capital of the island, the colorful Coves de Gรจnova are a hidden gem in Mallorca. They were discovered back in 1906.
Out of all the cave systems, Coves de Gรจnova are one of the smallest caves in Mallorca however that comes with an advantage – not many tourists choose to visit this place so you might even be there all on your own.

The cave labyrinth takes you to chambers and nooks full of different types of stalactites and stalagmites all created over thousands of years. This experience was very intimate. We felt like we were transported to a different planet.
It doesn’t take too long to walk the route underground so this is a great option to choose if you want to see caves in Mallorca but are short on time and don’t want to travel too far from Palma de Mallorca.

5. Coves dels Hams

Discovered in 1905, Coves dels Hams are one of the most unique caves in Mallorca. The name of the caves translates as the ‘Fishhook Caves’ and it comes from the unique rock formations you can see there underground.
While normally stalactites are quite straight like icicles, here in this cave there is one gallery where all stalactites hanging from the ceiling are bent like fishhook. Thus the name of the cave.

But apart from that these are not the most spectacular caves in Mallorca. Although they are easy to visit and are great for families with kids (they show multiple light and music shows during the visit), the rock formations are not too impressive.
Although I wasn’t too amazed, I believe this would be fun for kids as the area next to the caves features a cool theme park called Dinosaurland, with massive dinosaurs and fun shows. For us adults, it was a bit meh.

6. Cova de Portals Vells

Cova de Portals Vells is a coastal cave located a 30-minute drive southwest of Palma. It is also known as Cova de La Mare de Dรฉu named after a sculpture of the Virgin Mary that was reportedly placed in the cave around 1450 by sailors.
But as we see it today, Cova de Portals Vells is one of the artificial caves in Mallorca. You can see the straight walls in the photos. It was erected as a result of quarrying stones for the construction purposes of Palma Cathedral.

While I liked exploring this area of Mallorca, I would not necessarily recommend traveling here specifically for the cave. It is rather abandoned and a bit littered. However, the area is very scenic.
The cave is located next to a lovely beach with the same name boasting shallow turquoise waters. You can get to the cave by a coastal path starting from the beach. But wear appropriate shoes – it is quite a rocky walk there.

7. Sa Cova Foradada

Here’s a cave off the beaten path! Sa Cova Foradada might not be a classic cave but I thought it deserves a place on the list of the best caves in Mallorca.
Sa Cova Foradada is like a perforated rock that looks like a sea cave located near Portocolom coastal town on the east coast of Mallorca. It is freely accessible at any time of the day.
The unique thing about this perforated rock is that you can see a nearby lighthouse through the hole which makes it a scenic place for photos. Especially around sunrise or sunset hours with the Mediterranean Sea shining in golden colors.
It is best if you come here when the sea is calm. Coastal areas become more dangerous when it rains or during storms. We came here during the day and it was beautiful. But bring appropriate shoes as you have to climb some rocks.

Happy exploring!
Mallorca is one of my favorite islands I have ever been to. Years ago I thought Mallorca was a party island made for beachgoers. Now, after visiting Mallorca 5-6 times it is hard for me to think of a more diverse and multifaceted island to visit than Mallorca.
We have spent many months living on the island of Mallorca while traveling around and discovering something new each time we went out the door – caves, villages, beaches, or epic views in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I hope you enjoy your time in the turquoise waters, picturesque villages, and crazy landscapes, of Mallorca as much as we did and I hope you get some travel inspiration from this blog post! Happy travels!
